Essential Claude Plugins: Remotion, Documents, Development & Community Packs

What this article covers

  • What Claude Plugins and Agent Skills are and how they differ.
  • Essential plugins by category: video and media, documents, development, productivity.
  • How to install plugins from marketplaces and write your own skills.
  • A real-world example: social media workflow for Botserv.de.

Introduction: Claude becomes a platform

Claude is no longer just a chatbot. Since Claude Code arrived, there’s a real extension system: Plugins. A plugin bundles slash commands, subagents, hooks, and MCP servers into an installable package. On top of that, you have Agent Skills, which are folders containing a SKILL.md file that teaches Claude how to handle a specific task, like building a PowerPoint deck or rendering a video.

Here’s the key point: plugins and skills aren’t apps with their own interface. They’re instructions and tools that Claude uses while working. If you use Claude Code or the Claude apps, you can automate recurring tasks without explaining everything from scratch each time.

Fundamentals: Plugin, Skill, MCP, what’s what?

These three terms get mixed up constantly. Here’s the breakdown:

  • Plugin: An installable package for Claude Code. Can include slash commands (/something), specialized subagents, hooks (automated actions triggered by events), and MCP servers. Install from marketplaces or directly from Git repos.
  • Agent Skill: A folder with SKILL.md plus optional scripts and resources. Claude reads the instructions only when the task matches. Skills work in Claude Code, the Claude apps, and via the API.
  • MCP Server: A technical interface to external systems (databases, APIs, file systems). Plugins can include MCP servers but don’t have to. Read more in the MCP section.

Quick rule of thumb: skill teaches Claude the how, plugin delivers the whole package, MCP connects to the outside world.

Installing plugins: The plugin marketplace

Claude Code comes with a /plugin command. The workflow:

# In Claude Code: add marketplace
/plugin marketplace add anthropics/claude-code

# Install plugin
/plugin install plugin-name@marketplace-name

Or directly via Git repo:

/plugin marketplace add github.com/owner/repo

Marketplaces are fundamentally just Git repositories with a plugin definition. Anyone can offer one, which is why the ecosystem has grown so fast.

You can install skills without a plugin: a folder with SKILL.md in .claude/skills/ in your project or in ~/.claude/skills/ for your user is enough. Claude automatically finds and loads them when the description matches the task.

Category 1: Video and media

Remotion (video from code)

The most exciting plugin for content production right now: Remotion has published official skills that let Claude generate complete videos as React code and render them. You describe the video you want, Claude writes the Remotion composition (scenes, text, transitions, subtitles) and renders it to MP4.

  • What it does: explainer videos, social media teasers (including 9:16 for Shorts/Reels), animated titles, subtitles, data visualizations as motion graphics.
  • Why it’s special: video was the gap in the AI content pipeline. Claude could already handle text and images, now it can do motion graphics, deterministically and reproducibly from code.
  • Installation: as a skill from the Remotion repository or via npm package in your own project.
npm install remotion @remotion/cli

Other media skills

  • canvas-design: Generates posters, social media graphics, and banners as PNG or PDF. Great for OG images and article teasers.
  • theme-factory: Applies ready-made themes to slides, documents, and artifacts.
  • brand-guidelines: Keeps Claude aligned with your brand colors and fonts, essential for consistent output.
  • slack-gif-creator: Animated GIFs for Slack and social media.
  • algorithmic-art: Generative art and visual experiments with code.

Category 2: Documents and office

Anthropic maintains document skills themselves. They rank among the most frequently installed extensions:

  • docx: Create, edit, and read Word documents. Reports, contracts, proposals.
  • xlsx: Excel files with formulas, charts, and formatting. Data analysis and reporting straight from Claude.
  • pptx: Generate PowerPoint presentations. Combined with theme-factory, also brand-compliant.
  • pdf: Read PDFs, extract tables, fill forms, and merge PDFs.
  • doc-coauthoring: Collaborative writing on longer documents with a clean workflow (draft, feedback, revision).
  • internal-comms: Internal communication like status reports or newsletters in consistent format.

These skills work in the Claude apps too, not just the terminal. If you regularly create reports or proposals, you’ll save the most time here.

Category 3: Development and technology

  • webapp-testing: Claude controls a browser (Playwright), clicks through a web app, and verifies behavior. Practical for frontend testing without written test cases.
  • mcp-builder: Helps build your own MCP servers, including best practices and structure.
  • artifacts-builder: Creates complex HTML artifacts with React, Tailwind, and shadcn components.
  • skill-creator: The meta skill. Describe a workflow, and the skill-creator generates a finished SKILL.md. The fastest way to your own skills.
  • web-artifacts-builder: For interactive demos and prototypes as artifacts.

There are also many community developer plugins: commit helpers, PR reviewers, security scanners, code documentation, and more.

Category 4: Productivity and workflows

This is where the community ecosystem flourishes most:

  • superpowers (obra/superpowers): One of the most well-known plugin collections. Contains structured workflows for planning, debugging, and TDD-style work with Claude.
  • awesome-claude-skills (ComposioHQ and others): Curated lists with dozens of skills for all areas, from meeting notes to database queries.
  • wshobson/agents: Large collection of specialized subagents (security reviewer, database admin, DevOps engineer and many more) as ready-made plugins.
  • claude-code-plugins-plus: Extensive community marketplace with plugins for very specific tasks.
  • Jira, Notion, and Slack integrations: Plugins that connect Claude directly to project management and communication.

Be cautious with community plugins: they run with the permissions of your Claude Code session. Check repos before installing, especially what hooks and scripts execute.

Category 5: Writing your own skills

The biggest leverage isn’t in installing but in building. A skill is just a folder:

.claude/skills/my-skill/
├── SKILL.md # description + instructions
└── scripts/ # optional helper scripts

The SKILL.md contains frontmatter with name and description, then instructions in markdown. Claude only loads the file when the description matches the task. This keeps context lean.

name: article-teaser
description: Creates social media teasers from BotServ articles. Use when promoting a new article.
---

# Article Teaser

1. Read the article's MDX file.
2. Extract title, key points, and a call to action.
3. Generate three variants: LinkedIn, Mastodon, short video script.

You’ve built a reusable plugin in ten minutes without learning a framework.

Real-world example: Social media workflow for Botserv.de

Here’s how Botserv.de could use plugins to automatically promote every new article:

New article (MDX)
    │
    ▼
[1] Custom skill: article-teaser
    - reads the article
    - writes LinkedIn post + Mastodon text
    │
    ▼
[2] Skill: canvas-design
    - generates teaser graphic with article title
    - brand colors via brand-guidelines
    │
    ▼
[3] Remotion skill
    - renders 20-second short (9:16)
    - title, 3 key points, end screen with URL
    │
    ▼
[4] n8n or manual post
    - text + graphic on LinkedIn/Mastodon
    - video on YouTube Shorts

Concretely for an article like the VRAM calculator guide:

Input: "Create a teaser for /tools/vram-rechner"
→ LinkedIn text: "How much VRAM does your LLM need? Our calculator tells you. ..."
→ Graphic: 1200x630 OG-style image with title and BotServ logo
→ Video: 3 scenes, hook "Your model won't load?", key points, CTA

The special thing: each step is reproducible. The Remotion composition lives as code in the repo, the skill instructions too. If your corporate design changes, you update brand-guidelines once instead of every asset individually.

Realistic time comparison: manually, a package like this costs easily an hour per article. With plugins, it’s just minutes, and quality stays consistent because the same instructions and themes apply.

Getting started tips

  1. Start small: Try an official skill first (docx or canvas-design), then Remotion, then write your own skill.
  2. Keep skills project-specific: .claude/skills/ in the repo rather than global, so everyone on the project gets the same tools.
  3. Write descriptions precisely: Claude decides whether to load a skill based on its description. “Helps with social media” is too vague. “Creates teasers from BotServ MDX articles for LinkedIn and Mastodon” is good.
  4. Review community plugins: For marketplaces from unknown sources, read the SKILL.md and scripts before they execute.
  5. Don’t automate everything: Plugins pay off for recurring tasks. One-off things are faster by prompt.

FAQ - Frequently asked questions

Are Claude Plugins free? Most plugins and skills are open source and free. Using them requires Claude Code or a Claude subscription. Some marketplaces charge for premium plugins.

Do I need Claude Code for plugins? Plugins with slash commands and hooks require Claude Code. Pure Agent Skills (SKILL.md) also work in the Claude apps and via the API.

Is Remotion free? Remotion is open source. For commercial use in companies above a certain size, there’s an enterprise license; for individuals and small projects, it’s free.

Can I publish my own plugins? Yes. A Git repo with the plugin definition is enough. Others can then add it as a marketplace and install the contained plugins.
