Hermes Agent: The Self-Learning AI Agent from Nous Research

What This Article Covers

  • What Hermes Agent is and what sets it apart from other AI agents.
  • Can Hermes Agent use Instagram? Yes, via Skills and Publishing APIs; details below.
  • What else it can do: persistent memory, Skills, Cron automation, subagents, multi-platform gateway.
  • Common real-world use cases.
  • Setup, model selection, and how it compares to OpenClaw and similar tools.

Introduction

Hermes Agent (Nous Research, since February 2026, MIT License) is an open-source AI agent with a defining feature that sets it apart from chatbot-style tools: it learns from its own experience. After completing complex tasks, it autonomously creates Skills, refines them through use, searches past sessions, and builds an increasingly accurate model of your preferences across sessions.

It doesn’t live in a browser or IDE. Instead, it runs on your server or VPS, and you interact with it via Telegram, Discord, Slack, WhatsApp, Signal, or a terminal TUI. One process, all channels.

What Can Hermes Agent Do?

CapabilityDetails
Persistent MemoryRemembers preferences, projects, and context across sessions; FTS5 full-text search across all past conversations
Self-Generated SkillsAfter complex tasks, it writes its own Skills (agentskills.io standard) and improves them through use
Multi-Platform GatewayTelegram, Discord, Slack, WhatsApp, Signal, CLI; one gateway process with conversations flowing seamlessly across platforms
Cron AutomationNatural-language scheduler: “send report to Telegram every morning at 8”, runs unattended
SubagentsDelegates parallel workstreams to isolated subagents
Model FlexibilityNous Portal, OpenRouter, OpenAI, Ollama, or local endpoints: hermes model switches without code changes
60+ Built-in ToolsTerminal, file operations, browser, HTTP, Git, code execution
TUIReal terminal interface with slash commands, history, streaming
Bot ModeSince v0.21: dedicated bot mode, multi-agent chats, controllable subagents, MCP Command Center

Can Hermes Agent Use Instagram and Post?

Yes, via Skills. Hermes doesn’t have a built-in Instagram module, but its Skills system (agentskills.io standard) is designed for exactly this. The typical flow:

Hermes Agent (Brain)
    └── Skill: instagram / social-posting
└── Publishing API: Postiz, Publora, Zernio, Blotato, or Composio MCP
└── Instagram Graph API → Post live

Concrete example with Postiz (Postiz article):

# Install Postiz agent skill for Hermes
npx skills add gitroomhq/postiz-agent
export POSTIZ_API_KEY=your_api_key

# Then in chat:
# "Post this image tomorrow at 6 PM on Instagram with caption X"

Hermes then calls postiz upload → postiz posts:create with integration ID, timing, and settings (Feed Post, Story, Reel, Trial Reels, collab tags).

Important limitations:

  • No text-only posts: Instagram requires image or video. Hermes writes captions, hooks, and hashtags, but you must supply the visual content (or have it generated via an image-generation Skill).
  • No direct app access: Posting happens through the official Graph API and Publishing services, not browser automation, which violates Meta’s terms.
  • Business or Creator account required: The Graph API doesn’t work with private accounts.

Common Real-World Use Cases for Hermes Agent

  • Always-on personal assistant: Runs on a €5 VPS, reachable via Telegram. Research, reminders, reports, coding tasks. The assistant that never sleeps.
  • Social media autopilot: Write content → Postiz/Blotato → Instagram/LinkedIn/TikTok; daily reports back. Skill bundles like instagram-skills or hermes-content-engine are built for exactly this.
  • Background dev assistant: Monitor repos, triage issues, nightly refactorings, documentation generation, all via Cron and subagents.
  • Research automation: Weekly competitor or topic research (e.g., via Perplexity Sonar on OpenRouter), results delivered as a Slack report.
  • Team bot: Bot Mode with multi-agent chats as a persistent team assistant in Mattermost, Slack, or Discord.

Setup

# One-liner install (Linux, macOS, WSL2)
curl -fsSL https://hermes-agent.nousresearch.com/install.sh | bash

# Choose a model
hermes model # Nous Portal, OpenRouter, OpenAI, custom endpoint (Ollama)

# Start it
hermes # Interactive TUI

Data lives in ~/.hermes/, no telemetry, no tracking. Configure the gateway for your messaging platforms (add bot tokens), and you’re reachable everywhere.

With a local model: Hermes accepts custom endpoints. On an MS-S1 Max with 128 GB, Ollama serves as the backend with Hermes as the agent layer on top.

Key Takeaways:

  • Hermes Agent is a self-learning, open-source agent (Nous Research, MIT License) with persistent memory, self-generated Skills, and a multi-platform gateway.
  • Instagram: yes, via Skills and Publishing APIs (Postiz, Publora, Zernio, Composio); image or video required, Business account needed.
  • Most common use: always-on personal assistant on a VPS, social media autopilot, background dev assistant, research cronjobs.
  • Model-agnostic, works with local Ollama too.
  • Unlike frameworks: a finished agent ready to install, not a toolkit.

FAQ

Can Hermes Agent post on Instagram?

Yes, via Skills such as the Postiz agent skill or bundles like instagram-skills. Hermes writes captions and hashtags, then calls the Publishing API (Postiz, Publora, Zernio). You must supply the image or video, or have Hermes generate one via an image-generation Skill. Instagram doesn’t allow text-only posts. A Business or Creator account is required.

How is it different from a chatbot?

Memory across sessions, self-generated Skills, Cron automation, and subagents. It runs permanently on your server and improves with each session. A chatbot just responds.

Which models can it use?

Any: Nous Portal, OpenRouter, OpenAI, Anthropic, or custom endpoints like Ollama. Switch via hermes model without changing code.

Where does it run?

Linux, macOS, WSL2, from a €5 VPS to a local mini-PC. Data stays in ~/.hermes/, no telemetry. Access it via gateway over Telegram, Discord, Slack, WhatsApp, Signal, or terminal.

What are Hermes Skills?

SKILL.md bundles in agentskills.io standard format: instructions plus scripts for recurring tasks. Hermes creates them automatically after complex work, or you install pre-built ones (like Instagram bundles) into ~/.hermes/skills/.

Is it free?

The software is (MIT License). You pay only for the model (API costs or hardware for local models) and optionally for Publishing services like Postiz.
